University of Regina Gap Year Program


The UR Gap Year is a new program for current high school students planning on taking a year off in between high school and coming to the University of Regina.  By indicating that you’d like to be a part of the UR Gap Year Program, we will defer your admission as well as any automatic entrance scholarships funded by the University of Regina you have qualified for. During the year, you’ll also be able
to take advantage of many services to help you stay connected with the University and prepare you for your first year of study or future career options, including the opportunity to earn credit towards the UR Guarantee Program!  Some of the other additional services include access to:
  •  Career Centre
  • Aboriginal Student Centre
  • Student Success Centre / UR Guarantee
  • Centre for Student Accessibility
  • Dr. John Archer Library
  • Academic Advising
You are eligible to take part in the UR Gap Year Program if you meet the following criteria:
  • Must be applying to the University directly from a Canadian high school
  • Applying to a direct-entry undergraduate program (excluding Nursing and Education)
  • Will not be attending another postsecondary institution during the Gap year. Students who plan to pursue studies at
    non-accredited institutions may be considered
How to be considered:
  • Submit your application for admission to the University of Regina
  • In your admissions package you will find the UR Gap Year Program form
  • Mail the completed form to the Admissions Office by August 31st, 2012


Monsanto Opportunity Fund Scholarships

Deadline: May 25, 2012
Amount: $1500


Monsanto Fund Opportunity Scholarships are available to students who meet the following criteria:
 
--  Students must come from a family farm with confirmed plans to enroll in
    their first year of post-secondary education in agriculture or an
    agriculture-related program;
--  Students must have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership
    capabilities, and a keen interest and involvement in their rural
    community;
--  Students must submit a completed application form, which includes an
    essay that outlines what area of agriculture they would like to work in
    and why;

Jack Moore Memorial Scholarships and Bursaries

Deadline: August 28

Saskatchewan Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, in cooperation with Dominion Command are offering ten scholarships of $300 each.
These are offered to students who have completed Grade 12 and are continuing their education (first year) at university, technical school, or business college. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic standing.
Applicants must be sons/daughters, grandsons/granddaughters and great grandsons/granddaughters of veterans,  ex-service or still serving military or R.C.M.P.

Saskatchewan Pulse Producers Scholarship

Deadline: Friday, May 11 at 5:00 p.m.

This scholarship is open to sons/daughters of registered Saskatchewan pulse producers who are entering a post-secondary program associated with pulse production or agriculture(agriculture, natural sciences, engineering, nutrition) in the fall.

A total of 5 scholarships are available for $5000 each.

The Saskatchewan Dream Video Contest

Deadline: Friday, March 30

Enter your proposed written concepts for a short video based on "The Saskatchewan Dream" and the 100th anniversary of the Legislative Building to videocontest @gov.sk.ca. Participate on your own or as part of a group of up to 3 members.

The winners will be an all-expense paid trip to Regina where they'll work with professional film experts to produce their films.

Les Donnelly Scholarship

Deadline: May 31

The Les Donnelly Scholarship is awarded annually up to a maximum of $2000. It is funded by the Saskatchewan Safety Council's Trust Fund, which was established to help fund safety education and public awareness programs and events.

The recipient of the scholarship must be a Saskatchewan resident who is enrolled in a college or university level program. Applicants must submit their responses to the eligibility questions along with their application to be considered.

Hazel Asmussen Fund

Deadline: April 30, 2012 at 5:00 p.m.

This fund was established to provide annual grants to post-secondary students in the fine arts. Eligible applicants must be registered in post-secondary programs for the Fine Arts and must be from the Battlefords and district.

Applicants are asked to complete the form found here and then return it with all required materials to the Battlefords and District Community Foundation, Inc., Box 1302, North Battleford, S9A 3L8 or by email to sterlingcommunications@littleloon.ca


High School Physics Competitions

1. University of Saskatchewan High School Physics Competition
Requests due April 27
Wednesday, May 9 - Exam Day

This 1.5 hour multiple choice exam is based on the Saskatchewan High School Physics Curriculum.

Prizes are $250 for first; $150 for second and $100 for third and are awarded when the winning student enrolls in a first-year Physics, Engineering Physics or Astronomy class at the University of Saskatchewan.

2. Canadian Association of Physicists High School Prize Examination

Requests due March 23
Thursday, April 5 - Exam Day
This 3 hour examination has a combination of multiple choice and long answer problems. First pize is $500; second is $300 and third is $200. Additional prizes for top students in the province. Top national students will be invited to participate in the National Physics Olympiad finals to select the Canadian team for the International Physics Olympiad in Estonia bettween July 15 and 24, 2012.

University of Alberta AP/IB Student Conference

March 10, 2012
The AP/IB Conference, "Exploring Global Change" is a free, full day event happening at the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS) on U of A's North Campus.

This conference provides Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate students with an opportunity to explore an important set of global issues, network with other students and university faculty, and be exposed to what the University of Alberta has to offer.
