SIAST Business Programs Contest

Contest runs from March 1 - March 31, 2011.

Students aged 15 and over are invited to enter this photo contest. Tuition prizes of $1,000 and $750 are available for SIAST Business programs as well as two iPads! Students who are 18 or older can enter the contest on Facebook. Students who are 15 - 17 years of age will find a link on Facebook to enter the contest on a microsite (Facebook requires contest entrants to be at least 18 years of age).

Skills Work!

Skills Canada (Saskatchewan) is a not-for-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skills trade and technologies to Saskatchewan youth. This organization sponsors provincial, national and international "Olympic Style" skills competitions for secondary, post-secondary and apprentice students to compete in numerous trade and technology areas.

UBC Major Entrance Scholarships

Major Entrance Scholarships recognize students who excel across the board and who have demonstrated academic and leadership achievements in the arts, community, athletics, and school. They are available to students entering UBC from secondary school or from college or university.

You must be nominated by a school counsellor to apply. A school may nominate a number of students equal to 2% of its graduating class. Please ensure that you receive approval from your counsellor before pursuing a nomination.

Dalton Camp Award

Deadline: March 15

The Dalton Camp Award will go to the winner of an essay competition on the link between democracy and the media in Canada. In 2011, there will be one Award consisting of a prize of $5,000, as well as a bronze cast medal by the late Canadian sculptress Dora de Pédèry-Hunt. Up to four finalists will also be recognized and awarded a prize of $1,000 each.

Miller Thomson Scholarships

The Miller Thomson Foundation has increased the National Scholarship Programme from $200,000 to $300,000 annually, awarding 100 entrance scholarships in the amount of $3,000 each.

Students:
-must be attending a Canadian secondary school, planning onentering a Canadian post-secondary institution in the Fall to pursue a course of study within Canada leading to a degree or diploma from an accredited community college or university.
-must obtain a Secondary School Diploma.
-must be a Canadian citizen and/or a permanent resident of Canada.
have maintained a minimum grade average of 87% in Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12.
-must provide school transcripts for grades 9, 10, 11, and in-progress Grade 12 grades.

Sears High School Design Competition

Design Exchange is proud to announce the 16th Annual Sears Canadian High School Design Competition. The aim of the competition is to promote the study and awareness of various design disciplines in schools across Canada. The competition is open to all high school students, at the junior (grades 10 and below) and senior (grades 11 and above) levels. Prizes will be awarded at the two levels, in each of the four categories – Industrial Design - Task Light, Fashion Design - Reclaimed T-Shirt, Architecture / Interior Design - Refueling Station, and Graphic Design - 2011 Competition Certificate.

CUPE Local 5111 Scholarships

CUPE Local 5111 (Prairie North Regional Health Authority) will award one $500.00 scholarship per regional branch. Branches are Lloydminster, Maidstone, Turtleford, Meadow Lake and the Battlefords(2)
To apply you must be a CUPE Local 5111 member or family member (son/daughter/grandchild).
Application will be a minimum three hundred word essay on “Trade Unionism”.
The scholarships are for any post secondary education
Successful applicants must also provide proof of enrollment prior to receiving the scholarship.

Lifetouch Canadian Association of Principals Scholarship

The Canadian Association of Principals and Lifetouch, Canada are proud to sponsor this award this year. The purpose of this award is to afford principals the opportunity to recognize one of their student leaders and to enter that student as a nominee for a national scholarship.

The C.A.P. Student Leadership Award scholarship is designed to provide the broadest possible base upon which to evaluate candidates. Effective 2010, Twelve scholarships of $750.00 each will be awarded. (One scholarship per CAP provincial/territorial affiliate) Only students graduating in their final year of high school are eligible for nomination.

Each school that wishes to participate in the scholarship program is asked to nominate one student leader who demonstrates outstanding leadership. Nominees should be in the top 20% of their class. Deadline to submit nominations is March 1.

SIAST Program Changes

Business Education - An optional co-operative education component will be added to the Business Administration program at Palliser Campus, Moose Jaw. For the 2011-12 academic year and subsequent academic years, students entering the Administration diploma program will have the option to join the co-operative education stream, which involves a work placement in January.

Steel Fabricator and Welder Certificates - SIAST plans to offer the combination Steel Fabricator and Welder certificate,beginning September 2011. This initiative will be offered in response to industry demand for pre-employment steel fabricator training. Based on level one Steel Fabricator apprentice curriculum and level one Welder apprentice curriculum, the program will also provide curriculum enhancements for a non-apprentice. Graduates from the program will be able to pursue a career in either trade. The program will soon be listed in the SIAST program listings on our web page.

Deleted Programs: In addition, the Custom Harvester certificate and the Pork Production Technician applied certificate were deleted, effective January 1, 2011.

U of A Aboriginal Students Discovery Day

Aboriginal students are invited to experience the U of A at their third annual Aboriginal Student Discovery Day (ASDD). During this event, they offer Aboriginal students and their influencers an opportunity to learn about the different programs that are offered at the University of Alberta.

The goal of this day is to showcase their vibrant Aboriginal community. Aboriginal Student Discovery Day will take place on Friday, May 20, 2011 at North Campus in Edmonton.
