King's University College News - New Programs

The King's University College is a Christian university located in Edmonton. It offers fully accredited degrees in the arts, science, music, commerce and education. This year they have added two music after degrees. The first is a one-year Performer's Certificate and the other is a one-year Artist's Diploma.

King's View Fridays open houses will take place throughout the year on November 17, January 19, February 9, March 2 and March 30.

Burger King Scholars 2007

Deadline December 15 - Awards are $1,000 each and may be used for educational expenses during the first year of college or post-secondary vocational/technical school. In 2007, approximately 700 scholarships will be awarded throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
Applicants must:
  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent.
  • Work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year (unless individual circumstances prevents the student’s involvement).
  • Demonstrate participation in community service and/or co-curricular activities.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Receive written nomination and signature from a school official and an employer recommendation (neither of whom is related to the student).
  • Plan to enroll in an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational/technical school by Fall 2007.

What is Engineering?

Application Deadline - October 30 - Grade 12 students, accompanied by one student advisor are invited to learn about the Engineering profession and the two schools of Engineering in Saskatchewan. Two sessions are scheduled: one in Saskatoon on Monday, November 6th and one in Regina on Tuesday, November 7th.
Each event consists of presentations given by praticing professional engineers, university professors and administrators, and university students with the objective of providing an accurate overview of what engineering is, what engineers do, and the exceptional eduational opportunities and the variety of programs offered in Saskatchewan by the two Universities.

Canada World Youth

With Canada World Youth, teams of 18 young people from different cultures spend a total of six months away from their homes, living together for 3 months in a Canadian community and three months in a community in one of Africa, Asia, the Carribbean, Eastern Europe or Latin America. Programs generally start in late August and end in March. Eligible participants are between 17 and 24 years of age, Canadian citizens, in good health, open-minded and flexible and highly motivated.

CWY also offers more speicalized programs for people who meet specific requirements. In addition they offer Global Learner Programs, which are shorter and carreied out in partnership with schools and community organizations.

House of Commons Page Program

Deadline: Monday, December 4 - House of Commons Pages are selected from high schools across Canada every year. They serve the House of Commons while beginning their studies at a university in the National Capital Region. The University of Ottawa offers a second year three credit political science course between September and April for House of Commons pages.

A salary of #10 800 is paid to pages throughout their working year. They work for 15 hours/week and their work schedule is coordinated with their university schedule. Candidates must be Canadian students or permanent residents; be graduating in 2006 to begin university studies in 2007; have an overall academic average of at least 80%; have a superior knowledge of both official languages and be accepted to a university in the National Capital Region.

Rural Discovery Day - University of Alberta

November 24 (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) - The University of Alberta is hosting it's annual rural Discovery Day. Grade 12 students can meet prominent graduate students and faculty representatives; staff from the office of the Registrar and Student Awards; and representatives from Campus St. Jean, Augustana Campus (Camrose), Residence Services and Campus Ambassadors.

New Program - Lakeland College

Lakeland College is now partnering with the University of Calgary to offer a Bachelor of Social Work in Rural and Aboriginal Communities. Courses are offered in a series of "learning circles," which means that students do not have to take them in any particular order. The courses are taught by U. of C. faculty and students pay tuition to the U. of C. For more information, see www.lakelandc.ab.ca.

Shad Valley

Deadlines: December 11 and January 15 - Shad Valley - This is a four week residential program that runs every July to encourage students to open their minds and explore new career opportunities. Students spend a month away from home attending a leading university campus, living in residence. While there, they work in teams to combine their knowlege and ideas in order to develop a business plan for an invention or innovation of their own making. October 31 - Applications for the TD Canada Trust Scholarships for Community Leadership are now available. This application requires that you write some short essays and obtain letters of support from community or school officials, so get your application soon!

Thompson Rivers University

Thompson Rivers University, located in Kamloops, British Columbia offers many degrees, as well as one and two year certificates and diplomas. Many of these certificates and diplomas connect to degrees. Students who have completed a two-year college diploma in Saskatchewan may be able to transfer their credits into a degree program at TRU.

Regina Entrance Scholarships

For students currently attending high school:

On or before June 15 - The entrance scholarship average is based on the highest final marks of 20-level or 30 level courses taken prior to or during the 1st semester of grade 12.

After June 15 - only final marks of 30-level couses are used to calculate the scholarship average.

Centennial Merit Scholarships - for students entering the U of R, Campion, Luther, or First Nations University who are entering directly from a Saskatchewan high school and who have an entrance scholarship average of 93%-94.99%. These students must be registered in a minimum of 12 credit hours in the semeester in which the scholarship is paid. This 93% average will be lowered, in descending order, until funds are exhausted.

Bishops Entrance Scholarships

March 1st - Bishop's University - offers renewable entrance scholarships to all Canadian high school students who have averages of 80% or higher. To be eligible, students must submit their application no later than March 1st. See www.ubishops.ca/dividends for more information.

SARC Recruitment Campaign

The Saskatchewan Association of Rehabilitation Centres (SARC) has launched a campaign that will have lasting benefits for people who work with persons with intellectual disabilities. This initiative, Caring Careers, will promote employment opportunities in Community-Based Organizations. The heart of this campaign is a website (www.caringcareers.ca) which will highlight job postings, information on job requirements, links to SARC Member agencies and testimonials from people who are working in this service sector.
